The
operation of laying out of the square started
at the end of the thirties, XX century and
was connected with preparation for celebrating
of the 800th anniversary of the great Azerbaijan
poet Nizami Ganjavi. The territory that
was subjected to reconstruction was occupied
with one-storied buildings, caravanserais
and trade shops. Their demolition allowed
to create in this part of the city one of
the most expressive architectural ensembles
in Baku which included the perfectly planned
square, magnificent monument to the poet,
area named after him, surrounding buildings
- the Museum named Nizami, dwelling house
“Monolit”, “Ismailiyye”, Publication House.
At the end of the eighties, the environment
of the square was subjected to some transformation
in connection with reconstruction of the
central zone of Baku. From the north a large
stairs esplanade began to border the square,
and from the east it was completed with
terraced water cascade. As if melody and
poetic tune of Nizami’s famous works are
reflected in the murmur of water.
