Nowadays,
Molokan (Lettuce) garden is called so. The
given garden located at the intersection
of the streets Gogol, U. Hacibeyov and R.
Rza, the given garden was called Molokan
not casually. In the 19th century this garden
was surrounded by caravanserais, at which
lettuces, bringing goods from different
districts, often put up. The nearest streets,
lanes, yards were dotted with cooper’s shops.
In the seventies, XIX century the authorities
decided to lay out a garden in this place,
true, groundwater and clay soil hampered
the growth of landed trees.
With time magnificent buildings were erected
around Molokan garden: the oil magnate Shibaev’s
brilliant private residence, in architectural
respect original house of the "Tea"
king of Russia Visotsky, the Mikado Theatre
(theatre named Samed Vurgun), built by Haji
Ashum’s son Ali Heydarov after trips to
China and Japan and, at last, Haji Alekber
Dadashov’s profitable houses. These buildings
changed the appearance of the garden and
its vicinities.
After establishment of the Soviet authority
Molokan garden was renamed into the garden
“9th January”, and then it was named after
Hashim Aliyev. Now it is named Khagani.
During the post-war period the garden was
reconstructed twice. The pool in a curvilinear
form with the sculptural group “Three graces”
began to form the basis of the architectural-landscape
composition.
Large blocks of natural stone serve as a
pedestal for sculptures. Though the garden
is very small in its size (approximately
0,8 h?), it is cozy enough and a favorite
rest-place for most of Baku citizens.
