Botanical garden of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences was founded under the Institute of Botany in 1935. It covers the lot 16 ha, in area in mountainous part of the town from the direction of Lokbatan highway.
There are several thousands of various trees and plants both in open and closed areas of Botanical garden. About 1000 species of plants are kept in closed places and about 1200 in open places. Over 2000 trees, bushes, flowers of Azerbaijan flora have been collected here.
There is a greenhouse, a ground designed for citron plants and flowers, a forest park, 3 pools, a laboratory with water regime and a building of central botanical garden of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences in the territory of Botanical garden.
There is a rich collection of deciduous plants and evergreen trees (a cypress, a pine, an olive, etc.) here.
Research work is carried out on the ground of the garden, allotted specially for various flowers: tulips, narcissuses, carnations, etc. More than 30 species of roses are cultivated in Botanical garden in order to impart beauty to our Republic, especially Baku.
A rich collection of tropical and subtropical plants was created in Botanical garden. Tropical trees impart special beauty to Botanical garden. Bananas have taken root well here. The length of leaves of these trees is 3-3.5 m., and width is from 70 cm up to 1 m. Various palm and citrus trees, a tropical vine, coffee, a feijoa have found here their second native land. All over the year aromatic smell of flowers, grown on bushes is spreading in the garden.
Researchers of botanical garden make investigations on fodder plants with the purpose of supplying stock-raising of our Republic with forage.
Botanical garden of Baku is one of the most interesting places in the town. Schoolchildren, students, young naturalists and simply amateurs of nature often come here.
Botanical garden of Mardakan, one of the most picturesque corners in Apsheron is located in 40 km from Baku. You can learn about that on the site http://nature.aznet.org.
