Two
types of air masses and atmospheric motion
penetrate into Baku: tropical air masses
and air masses of Central Asia. Tropical
air masses mainly permeate from the South
in summer and cause hot and dry weather,
and promote rise in air temperature during
cold period of the year. And air masses
of Central Asia penetrate from the East
through the Caspian Sea. These air masses
raise the temperature in summer and reduce
in winter and often form east and south-east
winds. At the same time the weather is stably
less cloudy and dry.
Prevailing winds are north and north-east
winds, called “Khazri” in public. Sometimes
their speed reaches 35-40 m/sec that causes
serious damage to national economy. Enough
frequent strong winds “Khazri” make weather
unstable, embarrassing work of seamen, oilmen,
fishermen. On hot summer days “Khazri” reduces
the temperature of air and brings cool.
“Gilavar” winds, penetrating from south
and south-east promote softening of weather
in winter, and cause more heat in summer.
Khazri and Gilavar play important role in
purification of air from industrial pollution
in Baku.
On the coast of the Caspian Sea coastal
winds (night and daytime breezes) blow.
