The name of Baku means "city of winds".
The coat of arms of Baku is formed of three
torches against the sea waves. Long since
Azerbaijan is called "Land of fire"
and Baku with its burning springs is a sort

borders of Baku embrace the main part of
Absheron Peninsula. Baku is washed by the

the world's oil.

centers of Azerbaijan. It's also the center
of education and science of Azerbaijan.

is the complex of unique ancient structures
in the oldest part of the city, "Ichari
shahar" fortress ("The Inner City").
Being on of the pearls of Azerbaijan architecture,
the complex of Shirvanshahs' Palace (15th
century) is included into the museum-reserve,
created here. The Palace ensemble consists
of 9 structures. All of them strike by their
perfection and jewelry carving in stone.
Situated on the fortress territory the Maiden
Tower (12th century) is one of the main
city sights. Because of its architectural
features the Maiden Tower is the only one
in the East.
Located at a distance of 30 kilometers from
Baku Zoroasrian fire temple "Ateshgah"
is especially interesting. The temple site
was holy to the Zoroastrian fire-worshippers.
It is possible to see unique ancient petroglyphs
made by primitive people on the cave walls,
rocks and stone blocks in the State historical
and artistic reserve, located not far from
Baku. There are more than 4000 rock carvings
in Gobustan.
At present there are many museums in Baku.
Amateurs of entertainment will take pleasure
at different theatres, movie-theatres, restaurants. In
Baku You will also be able to get acquainted
with the magnificent patterns of the West-European
architecture of the end of the XIX and the
beginning of the XX centuries, and also
with remarkable samples of architecture
